Richland Creek Wilderness is one of the hiking shrines of Arkansas's Boston Mountains. Almost 12,000 acres in extent, it's a region of extraordinarily steep and rugged terrain, gigantic boulders, and startling blue green water. But what it's probably best known for are its fabulous waterfalls.
Guidebook hikes, great things in and of themselves, are after all, a known commodity. Directions to travel this many miles to see that fascinating feature, return to trailhead by this route. They're fine. We like 'em, we use them a lot.
Less than a half hour from the glitz and throb of Branson, Missouri waits a glorious area of peace and damn quiet: Hercules Glade Wilderness. Hercules consists of over 12,000 acres of mixed oak-hickory forest and cedar glades.
The upper Buffalo River watershed is just a candy store for hikers: Indian Creek, Hemmed-in Hollow, Cecil Cove, Hawk Hollow along with dozens of others including the amazing Lost Valley. But the longest trail is one we have only begun to appreciate in recent years: the Buffalo River Trail.
When May fades from the calendar, hiking options start to dwindle a bit. Trails get overgrown; June's heat and humidity become overbearing; snakes and poison ivy grace the land; and clouds of gnats who know not Deet rise from the febrile valley floor.
Hike of the Month maxim: Any place worth hiking to once is worth hiking to twice. The remote Richland Wilderness in Arkansas fits that criteria splendidly.
