Sun, soil key factors for vegetables

Fruit and vegetable gardens require a full-sun location and well-drained soil. Full sun is considered at least six hours of direct sun a day, although longer exposure is better. A few vegetable crops can tolerate some shade, but these are limited to the leafy green crops such as lettuces and Swiss chard, and the root vegetables.
