Northern People: Kroupa plants legacy

The hilly 80 acres off Barney Road featured about 45 acres of hardwoods when Kroupa purchased it in three parcels in 1952, 1953 and 1954. The remaining acres were barren, undesirable farmland and depleted soil. It is hard to picture the place as Kroupa first saw it.

Officials: Capitol Forest fire was arson

A wildfire that burned 12 acres and sent campers fleeing from the Capitol Forest on Friday has been determined to be arson, officials said. The so-called "Coyote Fire" began burning some time after 3 p.m. and spread quickly. It was fully contained by Saturday morning.
