State investigating St. Joseph tannery in connection to chromium 6 concerns

State investigators are planning to go to a St. Joseph tannery to look for barrels that may have been buried at the plant, a spokeswoman said Friday. The tannery already is under investigation after a lawsuit alleged that waste sludge from the plant contained the carcinogen chromium 6. Since the 1980s, the sludge has been applied as fertilizer to dozens of farms in northwest Missouri.
