Sebaceous glands secrete sebum, an oil that keeps our skin and hair supple and healthy. Trauma or swelling around the gland’s pore can block oil release. The gland swells with accumulated material, and a cyst develops. It is benign, but can be unsightly or annoying. Bacteria may get in, causing infection.
