Preschools take new approach as state pushes early education

By Claire Cummings | Preschool has changed a lot since Mildred Smith took on her first class 36 years ago. Today, her room at the McHugh Head Start on Greenwood Avenue feels much like kindergarten. In between painting and playing in the sandbox are pre-lunch quizzes on colors, student progress portfolios and parent-teacher conferences.
