Heating equipment is listed as the second leading cause of home fires across the nation. From December through February, however, it rises to the rank of No. 1. Fire Marshal Robert Cardwell reports 10 house fires in Rockingham County during November, most due to misuse of winter heating equipment.

The use and dangers of alternative home heating sources increase as the outside temperature decreases, local and state officials said.
With December comes the desire to shut the windows and doors, seal all the cracks from the threat of cold drafts and crank up the heater to keep warm during the long Routt County winter.
While it hasn’t been completely determined, Fire Chief James Blanchard said the fire on Mount Vernon Street in October that left an elderly man homeless was likely started by a portable heater.
As the temperatures drop, the number of house fires soar — with the majority of fire deaths typically occurring November though March, a Georgia fire officials says.
