Neural Light Show: OptoGenetics to Map and Control Brain Functions: SciAm: Light seems to be the new black (and more algae, even pond scum, reverse engineering chloroplasts, bio luminescence and fluorescence) - a shift from electrical impulses to stimulating with light (optogenetics - genes engineered to respond excitedly to red, green, blue frequences and fibre optics) - stimulating specific neurons and observing behaviour - plus Delgado's 1969 implants in bulls - see also KarlDeisseroth 's video at google
Neuron - Entrainment of Neocortical Neurons and Gamma Oscillations by the Hippocampal Theta Rhythm: They analyzed how hippocampal theta modulates neocortical temporal activity. They found that hippocampal theta can effectively bias the timing of local computation in the neocortex. A fraction of neurons in different neocortical areas as well as spatially localized and frequency-spec ific gamma oscillations were phase locked to hippocampal theta oscillations. Results are kind of mess but this paper is really nicely written.
