Codelco Sees Copper Surplus on Weakening U.S., Europe (Update1)

Oct. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Codelco , the world's biggest copper producer, will invest $1.8 billion next year, maintaining record spending even as weaker U.S. and European economies lead to the first global surplus of the metal since 2003.

Vandalism reported at Melrose, Albany schools

Vandalism was reported at the Melrose Public Elementary and High Schools at 7:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, which had occurred sometime between 1 and 2 a.m., according to the school surveillance system.

Freeport man injured in accident

Oct. 6 - 8:50 a.m. Elmer Henry Elfering, 95, Freeport, was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Lumina westbound on County Rd. 157, when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the south ditch, two miles east of Melrose.

Melrose City Office hours to change

Beginning Dec. 1 the Melrose City Offices will begin closing at 4:30 p.m. That is one half hour earlier than the present hours. At the meeting it was stated the employees would cut their lunch breaks by 30 minutes.

More than 1,000 people enjoyed a delicious pork dinner as a kickoff to National Pork Month, at the VFW Club. It was an "all you can eat" dinner for $1.50, and 2,363 pork sandwiches were eaten, along with baked beans with bacon, cole slaw, applesauce and beverages.
