Best foot forward: Meet the winners of our Summer Smackdown

After narrowing 60 flip-flop submissions down to three for the Times Union's Summer Smackdown contest, readers picked Julia Vining and Darcie Cristello as the winners. Julia, who is 13 and lives in Guilderland, won our children's category with her playing-card-themed shoes. Hudson's Cristello, 31, used her flip-flops as a canvas and designed footwear that put art before fashion.

Summer heat can be tough to beat. Paying high energy bills can kill a budget, too. There are many ways to lower energy usage during the summer, but sometimes it’s just not enough to keep the bills manageable.
