At the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb on Bird Ridge near Anchorage two weeks ago, Matias Saari of Fairbanks finished a dispiriting 17th. He drove away from that race unsure whether to chalk up his misery to a bad day, overtraining or workouts on a relatively puny hill back home.

In a finish as bizarre as it was surreal, Matias Saari of Fairbanks won the men's Mount Marathon race today after race leader Brent Knight collapsed within sight of the finish line on a hot afternoon.
