Ag, energy issues dominate talk at rally for Peterson at Climax farm; Franken there too

Nearly 200 people packed into a large shop Monday afternoon at Merle and Lee Anderson's rural Climax farm near the Red River on Highway 220 for a Democratic rally. U.S. 7th District Rep. Collin Peterson, also the House Agriculture Committee chair, and "special guest" Al Franken, who's running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Norm Coleman, spoke at the event.

Gypsum plant to slash 60 jobs

Georgia-Pacific will lay off 60 employees from its Brunswick Gypsum plant, and 30 Brunswick Cellulose employees will get smaller paychecks over the holidays because of a production slowdown. The cutbacks come as national economic woes trickle down to the local economy.

Conservancy building green facility

SYKESVILLE — A Mount Airy chamber member wants to kick some butt and rid parking lots of cigarette smokers’ leftovers. Mark Jarema, a Sykesville resident who is a disc jockey and owner of Hearty Party Entertainment, sees cigarette butts in large numbers in parking lots where he has worked.
