Rome Ever since Pope Benedict XVI set aside Vatican protocol to send a telegram of congratulations to Barack Obama on Nov. 5, ahead of his actually taking office, the Vatican has often seemed warmer to Obama than some voices in the American Catholic church, including some American bishops.
Pope Benedict XVI stressed the church's opposition to abortion and stem-cell research in his first meeting with President Barack Obama on Friday, pressing the Vatican's case with the U.S. leader, who is under fire on those issues from some conservative Catholics and bishops back home.

Mary Lucille Cox, 83, of Ferndale, Calif., died June 30. Mrs. Cox was born in Baileyville, Kan. She and her husband had a hog farm near Sunnyside. Survivors include two sons, David Serafy-Cox and Leonard Cox; and two granddaughters.
