An unlikely school emphasizes algebra

NATIONAL CITY — To make the case for eighth-grade algebra, Granger Junior High School math teacher Kevin Beiser works backward from his ultimate goal for his students: Harvard. To get into an Ivy League school, his students probably need to take Advanced Placement math in high school, he says.

Family Art Days 11 a.m. tomorrow, Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way. Children can participate in a memorial tile painting project, expressing their feelings about the Holocaust. The tiles will be mounted on the walls of the museum during the “Fabric of Survival” exhibition.

CARLSBAD: Home tour raises $20,000 for foundation

CARLSBAD ---- Six Carlsbad families opened their homes to the community May 15 during the 2009 "Castles of Carlsbad" tour to benefit the city's 10-year-old Library and Arts Foundation. The fundraiser brought in more than $20,000, which brings the earnings of "Castles of Carlsbad" to $100,000 over the past six years, organizers said.
