Bill Vlasic New York Times News Service WASHINGTON — General Motors will drastically cut jobs, factories, brands and executive pay in a desperate attempt to persuade Congress to give it $12 billion in loans to stave off a financial collapse.
A power plant in southern Kentucky will undergo a major renovation in two years, resulting in hundreds of temporary jobs and pollution control devices to clean the air.
Ford Motor Co. will tell Congress that it plans to return to a pretax profit or break even in 2011 when the Detroit Three automakers' CEOs appear before lawmakers this week to request $25 billion in government loans. Ford CEO Alan Mulally said he'll work for $1 per year if the company has to take any government loan money.
General Motors said it needed $12 billion in loans and a $6 billion line of credit and that it will cut jobs, factories, brands and executive pay.
In an unabashed plea for an emergency government rescue, GM said Tuesday that it needed $4 billion in immediate federal loans to stay in business after December, and another $8 billion to carry it through the first part of next year.
