Like many wine geeks, I have a deep appreciation for the aromatic white varietals. Wines such as muscat, pinot gris, gewurztraminer and riesling — the queen of them all — are so seductive and hypnotically beautiful that between sips you'll either find me dabbing some behind my ears or politely schooling chardonnay drinkers to dump their oak juice for something floral, exotic and spicy.
Close your eyes, stick your nose in a glass of muscat or gewurztraminer, and there's a good chance you will linger there, inhaling, for a long time. The aromatic white wines are a titillating breed. They thrive in cool climates such as Alsace, France, and California's Anderson Valley, where an upcoming festival pays homage to their beauty.
